Below is a map showing the four most central sangkats or communes in Siem Reap town. The vast majority of expats living in Siem Reap stay in one of these four Sangkats. The true city centre which includes Pub Street and the Siem Reap Referral Hospital is in the eastern part of Svay Dangkum close to the river.
If you drew a circle with a 2km radius using the intersection of the river and Road 6 as the centre, it would cover most of the coloured areas of the map. Unless you particularly want or need to be a walkable distance from a particular feature, nothing is far. This means that you can really live in any of these four central sangkats and be close to everything you will need.
Administrative levels
In Cambodia, the administrative levels are as follows.
Level 1: Province or Municipality (Phnom Penh is a municipality, not a province)
Level 2: District
Level 3: Commune (sangkat)
Level 4: Village (phum or phumi)
So you might live in Phumi Wat Bo (village), Sangkat Sala Kamreuk (commune), Krong Siem Reap (district), Siem Reap (province)
