We're two Australians living in Siem Reap, Cambodia!
We are Jeremy and Claire, two Australians originally from Rockhampton, Queensland. We lived in Brisbane for a long time before realising our dream of a more nomadic lifestyle with freedom to do what we enjoy.
Because we're retired, we have the flexibility to visit parts of the world that we find interesting. We maintain our base in Siem Reap while we travel as we really enjoy life in Cambodia, and we also appreciate having a nice home to return to. Travel is great, but so is familiarity!
Our style is to deep-dive and stay longer.

A very long time ago, Claire used to be a high school teacher of English and Art. After teaching for ten years, Claire began to explore an interest in web development that eventually led to a qualification in interaction design and a career change. She's been working as a web designer / graphic designer / interaction designer for over 15 years. Her roles have usually been under the marketing and communications umbrella.
Claire retired in 2026.

Jeremy
Jeremy used to work on Queensland's long distance trains, managing the on board crew and attending to passenger service. He spent around 20 years in that role, and then decided to transition to the Brisbane urban rail network, first as a guard and later as a driver. He loved the long distance trains but didn't enjoy the urban network as much, even though it meant he was no longer away from home for three to four days at a time.
Jeremy retired in 2022.

We created the For Riel YouTube channel in 2019 and started publishing videos late that year. We became monetised in 2021.
How long have you lived in Cambodia?

We've been here since the end of November, 2019. We returned to Australia for 10 months in 2022, but the rest of the time we have spent either in Cambodia or other countries outside Australia.
Where have you lived in Cambodia?

We have lived in Siem Reap for longer than any other place in Cambodia, but we have also lived in Kampot (six months), Phnom Penh (six months), and Kep (one month).

Unless the video specifically calls for us to be in front of the camera, we won't be. We're all about showing you what we are seeing and that's far more interesting.

Why do you give your YouTube income to charities?
Back in 2019/2020 when we were just starting off, Covid was also gaining momentum around the world. We saw the impact it had on communities, particularly those in low income countries.
We decided that if we ever became monetised, we would give the money to charities operating in Cambodia. It didn't seem right to profit from videos made in Cambodia, particularly at that time.
We are very fortunate to be in a position to be able to donate this money, after all, it's easy to be generous when you already have enough.

We support Australian registered charities because we know that the monitoring and reporting requirements are rigirous. This gives us confidence in the charity's governance.
We currently support Reach and Heartprint, two fantastic organisations operating in Siem Reap. We used to support Cambodian Children's Trust in Battambang as well, but decided that we wanted to keep our charity partners as local as possible. If you're in Battambang, you can support Cambodian Children's Trust by eating at Jaan Bai restaurant.
We trust our charity partners to use any funds we donate to best advantage.

In 2000/2001 we lived in the United Kingdom, and in 2014 we lived in Hoi An, Vietnam.
